Chanticleer

the garden of my heart
sits quietly waiting
chairs placed side by side
beam with glowing luster
tadpoles swim
mosquitoes buzz
flowers dip and sway,
music from a springtime breeze
invites me out to play
lily pads provoke a game
of hopscotch cricket-style
dragon-flies flit overhead
and clap their wings for joy
cool water laps around the reeds
a gentle under-tone
announcing your arrival soon
to be with me
alone

Early this morning, I noticed two of these chairs’ cousins sitting under the leafy awning of a tree. They were tucked at the edges of a neighbor’s property, a silent invitation to pause and enjoy the show Creation is always offering…I recalled such moments in my own life, and thought about the possibility of a few in England and France this summer…thank you for the happy “dove-tailing,” in this little poem, of your life and mine!

The title reminded me of two competing thoughts: the musical group Chanticleer who would be able to provide a wonderful musical bed for the poem. And then Chanticleer, the character in Walter Wangerin Jr.’s book, “The Book of the Dun Cow.” An entirely different matter! 😉
