I can’t see the secrets; they’re underground. Have you ever watched Midsomer Murders? Very instructive. When open spaces are being closely guarded against land developers, the reason sometimes has to do with buried family secrets. Usually in the form of skeletons.
I don’t know if any secrets lie beneath the hills in this gorgeous Virginia valley. Yet the photo struck me as evocative. What happened in the past, matters. Even though we may take the secrets to our graves. Or create lovely graves for ugly secrets.

What a top post Elouise; and not a mention of you know who or what XD 👿
The past ALWAYS matters!

I’m not sure that family secrets need to imply a darkness. Maybe they are all those wonderful aspects of a family life/history that are forgotten.

Spoken like a true historian, John! 😊 Family secrets become a problem when the past or present managed in ways that protect some at the expense of others. Management of family secrets can be accomplished via various forms of coercion that serve the purposes of select family members, but put other members at risk. Some coercion is so controlled and subtle that it leaves no obvious evidence until things start falling apart. Which is way more than I started out to write!
