Ode to Cruciferous Delight
by Elouise
First things first for amateur poets such as I:
Ode – a lyric, often overly embellished poem
Meant to be sung or chanted with rapture
Please note no resemblance
Between ‘ode’ and ‘odiferous’ or ‘cruciferous’
Which meaneth no clothespins or otherwise pinch-ed nostrils
I commence herewith—
Loveliest of bitters, I adore you
With every aching cell of my body
And from the depths of my deep kidney hunger
My body aches for your bitter potion
That bringeth solace and life to my most inward of inward parts
Blazing a path of glorious heat
Straight and steady as an arrow
You sweetly sour my tongue, my throat, my very life
With your healing poison
You causeth my lips to pucker
And my tongue it quivereth with heat
My kidneys anticipate the glories of your delectable cleansing
Forgive me, dear radishes, brussels sprouts,
Kale, cauliflower, broccoli, turnips, and your near cousins
Sweetly called lemon and lime
How did I live my life so long
Without your tender ministrations burning
In the most secret of secret depths of my being?
Should you e’er forsake me
I will languish tormented as I await
The joyous moment of our bitter-sweet reunion!
Thus endeth my Ode to Cruciferous Delight.
Written in honor of my CKD (Chronic Kidney Delight) diet, mostly raw and bitter
Special thanks to my trusty Vitamix that maketh all things possible

Response to WordPress Daily Prompt: Bitter
I feel the same about kale and spring greens – lovely, dark, iron laden saviours. 😀 Glad you are enjoying their ministrations, minstrel. xxx

Oops! Starting over…Thank you kindly dear Fran. I’ve always liked them, but haven’t had to do them raw like this, or in such copious amounts! I’m off any meat or other ‘normal’ protein right now. Only limited vegetable-based powder protein. No soy or lactose (not new for me), and limited raw fruit. Most of it tastes pretty good in a smoothie. With some ginger, nuts and seeds, and other little goodies to mellow the taste out. 😊

You’re most welcome, Nancy! Better to laugh than cry right now–especially since meal prep has become fairly easy, if not thrilling. Fortunately, I’ve always liked veggies, so at least I’m not gagging on them! 😊

It all sounds pretty gruesome to me, I’m rather fond of Brussel sprouts and cauli, and was known to chomp on a lemon years ago, something I learned to do and enjoy from my dear ol’ dad!
I recall in England on a Sunday the Salvos would come and start playing their big brass instruments to the delight of many, but not my dad.
One Sunday he came up with an idea that might stop his Sunday peace from being disturbed.
He took a lemon, and went and stood right at the front, when the band started playing, he proceeded to eat the lemon, allowing the juice to roll down his chin.
The sight of my dad chomping on a big juicy lemon had the desired effect. The band stopped playing and had to move on.
After a repeat performance on D.o.D’s part the Salvoes gave up and didn’t return again.
? The weird English sense of humour?

What a great memory! Your Dad sounds like a scoundrel! 😀. I’m glad I like most of the food I’m feasting on these days, though I’d rather have them cooked or roasted than raw and all muddled together in a smoothie. My jaw would not agree with that last statement. It still longs for the good old days before it went out of perfect alignment! 😟

My dad had the face of an angel; soft and gentle, with blue/purple eyes that melted the hearts of young ladies and softened wayward boys and girls.
He had the most wicked sense of humour, I doubt there has ever been an American who would have understood it/him, even my mother didn’t, I did. The Sahara is a wetland compared to the dryness of his humour.

I love a lot of those, although raw, not sure how that would be…except the radishes, you can keep those 🙂 lovely and lifting post to your smoothie loves 🙂 thinking of you and now smiling and getting a bit hungry 🙂

Have to admit I’ve never been thrilled with them raw, either 😟 But putting in a piece of fruit, a big fat date and other moderating spices helps get the healthy brew in tolerable shape. Sometimes quite wonderful, depending on the sweetness of the fruit. Best taste moderator-prize goes to Bartlett 🍐 pears! 😊😍😎
