Ha! Ha! Such wonderful photos. Best one is Diane’s … I hope you have fun this hallowe’en. Are you going to be out in your pumpkin patch waiting for The Great Pumpkin? Spooooky… ๐ xxxx

Thanks, Fran! We’ll be at home waiting for the courageous few to venture up to our front door! We’re on a somewhat busy street, so most of the little customers go elsewhere. ๐ฆ Still, we ready! ๐

I love the scarecrow pumpkin but I love Diane’s the best ๐ perhaps you should put an empty beer on the ground next to it ๐ we went to carve ours this morning and found it rotted (as did the first one we bought a few weeks ago) so no pics from me of smiling jack-o-lanterns….sigh ๐

So do I (love Diane’s the best)! The empty beer can would be most appropriate–though I’d have to sketch it in, and I don’t know what Diane would think about that! Rotten pumpkins stink! Too bad. Still, you could go out trick-or-treating! ๐

the pumpkin made it to the garbage today for pick up tomorrow….I would have enjoyed seeing it carved though ๐ I dressed up anyway and had around 7 kids show up for treats….and as a joke, had a can of Chef Boyardee Ravioli….I’d ask the kids if they wanted it, they all said no and reached for the candy. Hubby managed to hand the can off to an adult who asked what we had for him ๐ he seemed impressed ๐

What fun for you and for the kids! Especially that can of CBR. Poor pumpkin…though it sounds like it had a fitting ending. ๐

Halloween was never part of our lives back when I was young. But then we never had a Salem in Australia. Now of course the commercialism of Companies such as MacDonalds pushes American culture at us with no understanding of Australian Culture and no explanation of what is behind things anyway.

You might enjoy this article on the origins of Halloween โ http://www.livescience.com. When I was young, this was considered a pagan celebration, with preachers exhorting us not to get mixed up in satanic customs, including any witch costumes. The pumpkin ๐ tradition came over with Irish immigrants, who faced plenty of hostility because of their religious beliefs. The original Irish โpumpkinsโ were turnips. Hence the two ghoulish turnips. I fear this holiday, like others, has become another merchandising opportunity for retailers.

Thanks Elouise, I still can’t find anything about it to get excited about.

Another superstition enjoyed by the Yankees? ๐

I donโt think itโs even a superstition. Just a commercial opportunity for retailers and another chance to gorge on sweets. If I sound a bit jaded itโs because weโve become a nation plagued by obesity. Very sad. Halloween used to be a time for home-made costumes, home-made treats, apples and oranges, and fun visits to neighbors. Often

a bit like christmas and easter all about flogging stuff to the natives. and ripping them off.
The past few years has seen the so called halloween insidiously encroach upon Australia and on our way of life, which can only be attributed to the idiot box and the increasing amount of garbage thrown at us by the US tv people. This is about to get even worse. The American ABC network has bought an Australian network; and I dread to think of what rubbish they’re holding from the US audiences that will be unloaded on the poor unsuspecting dumbnuts here.
We’re just lucky that they cannot use he name ABC here, as we already have our own ABC which is owned by we the people and is the only sane TV in the country, A bit like the BBC is to Great Britain

Yes, a bit like that. My TV preferences are BBC and our daily hour-long PBS News Hour. No commercials, no junk and no hype. Just in-depth reporting and interviews. I wish we could get your ABC network here. ๐

I don’t suppose you can get our ABC on your computer like I can; but here’s the link to iview http://iview.abc.net.au/programs/ if you want to give it a go. Perhaps the US doesn’t allow it into the country

Iโll give it a try. I frequently pull up Australian sites when Iโm doing searches. Thanks for the link! ๐

Well…I tried. The link went through, but according to the FAQs, I can’t watch outside of Australia. ๐ฆ Too bad.

Oops. That one left early! Today parents spend tons of money on the holiday, and itโs not always safe to be out after dark. ๐
