searching for myself
by Elouise
This poem came to mind yesterday.
First published 10 Feb 2015, it captures the vulnerability of a lonely soul.
Lost and looking for relief in all the wrong places.
* * *
searching for myself
lost somewhere out there
in your eyes your smile
your listening ear
your approval your tenderness
your dream for me
are you an artist? a poet?
a musician? a sensitive soul?
maybe you can help me
find myself
I think I love you or do I see
a lovely reflection of my
still-lost self in you?

Ohhh those last two lines are very interesting – about trying to find oneself!

Ironic, isn’t it? Often what we most long for and love in others is actually in us, unrecognized. Thanks, Christy.

Which is something that makes me wonder if we subconsciously want to find someone who is like ourselves because we believe that it would allow us to remain within our comfort zones and not have to take that initial step toward actually dealing with those things in others that we know will more than likely make us have to take a closer look at ourselves…and then actually have to deal working on ourselves

Interesting comment, Sean. Sometimes I know that’s true for me. It was different back then. I was looking for a cure to my feeling of loneliness and worthlessness. I didn’t realize I was infatuated with qualities that were already in me–unrecognized, unacknowledged and unappreciated. I didn’t know myself enough to work on anything–including the fact that I didn’t know myself. I hope that makes sense. Still, your comment is thoughtprovoking. We don’t like change–especially when we think we’ve gotten it ‘all together.’ Others who are different invite and even require us (and themselves) to change. Never easy in a relationship of any kind.

I’m learning to make self-evaluation a habitual practice. Even in doing that, I still miss some things that I need to work on. We’re not going to be able to get everything all at once. We just have to be patient and let patience work its good work within.
