two poems of celebration

by Elouise

songs of praise
transposed into
slow drumming
mass movements
in minor key
become laments

rolling waves of
living voices
the newly dead
rising, falling
requiem of hope
fueled by sorrow

heart and body
broken for
each broken child
of this world
gathered now
around tables
set with rations
crumbs of bread
drops of wine
small foretaste
of feasts to come

Written on the way home from Texas following a family member’s memorial service on Saturday, and Sunday morning worship with celebration of holy communion at his church.
