fine volcanic dust

dark shadows lengthen
beneath cloudless blue heaven

on grimy ridged metal wheels
smiles shyly for me

It seems almost impertinent to turn this workday photo into a set of haikus. Nonetheless, I’ve always found this photo of D intriguing.

Do I know he’s smiling for me? It’s a pretty safe bet he was. In 1964 we were engaged. He was on the West Coast; I was on the East Coast. This photo was taken on his father’s wheat ranch near Pendleton, Oregon. That’s wheat stubble in the foreground, fallow ground on the horizon. You can see a cleaner version of a similar Caterpillar D6 Dozer here.
