Old before her grownup time

Old before her grownup time
A little girl in adult mode
Within her childhood body
Performs an adult’s duties
Reserves once bright diminished now
She wills her youthful girlhood back
To fuel her lagging body
Perhaps she’ll wake up one bright day
And find those long-lost years
Held in reserve for later use –
Life savings locked within a vault
Accumulating dividends
I woke up a few days ago with a thought flitting around in my head: What if all my unspent childhood energy—lost to adult responsibilities before my time—is sitting somewhere waiting for me to reclaim it? You know–to fill in energy gaps that crop up when least expected or welcome.
After nearly 74 years, surely I’m entitled to reap something from all that premature investment in adulthood. Not just in my spirit, but (especially) in my body.
Now wouldn’t that be something to shout about? I might even put one of those giant trampolines in my backyard to burn off the energy!

Thanks for your lovely comment! Yes…we get lost without that playfulness that sometimes sits in the corner waiting to be noticed! 🙂

Hi, Elouise, I love your posts and can resonate with them. I don’t think I ever had any energy that I didn’t spend as a child. I was always, from birth, very tired. I think I was born depressed and have struggled with it ever since. But perhaps a trampoline in the back yard could add some energy to myself. The doctor has told me I must walk very fast for 15 minutes each day to try and regain some stamina. I have done so almost every day since then (over a month ago now) and do feel more awake, but energy is just hard to conjure up. The body does not feel like how I think in my brain. But if we did not get old and have our bodies wear out, heaven would not be so appealing.
Wondering how you are doing with your physical problems? Getting into our later seventies is not for sissy people. It takes a huge amount of courage and determination to push forward each day. Love you, Anne

Energy is my biggest challenge. I’m on a two-year program (one year into it) to help it along. It includes walking every day, but not too fast–which tends to deplete my energy instead of giving it a boost. Exercise, diet and sleep are also key elements. If one of them is missing in any day, I pay for it the next day! Nonetheless, writing for my blog is one of the greatest challenges and joys of my life. So I have a built-in incentive to do everything I can to keep things moving!
I work with one doctor on the energy challenge. She’s an integrative doctor, familiar with all the other things going on in my body. So far I’m doing well. I also know that things will never be ‘as they were’ before I got Lucy pacemaker and then broke my jaw. You’re so correct–it takes tons of courage and determination to stay with it at our age. Though I’ll say the rewards are wonderful–including full permission to turn down whatever doesn’t fit into my daily agenda! 🙂
Love and hugs and thanks for your comments,
Elouise

You were not meant to change it, so change it back, 👿

Hi, Brian. I made the change in good faith, and am leaving it as is. I believed you when you said oops! and corrected your spelling (in the comment now gone). As a mistake, it was funny–even though I don’t use that word to describe anyone. To my ears, it’s demeaning. Which I’m sure was not your intention.

Just in fun Elouise. 😀
By the bye, John Paol has decided that you are next to have a map on the wall, he said so on the post, you can check it out if you like; he did mention you in endearing terms. 🙂
