An Invitation
by Elouise
A walk in the late Spring
park of my mind beckons
beyond the open portal
of weary normal days
without wine and blossoming roses
Which will it be
I wonder in a weak attempt
to pretend this is about
a reasoned choice
or serious deliberation
The beauty of yesteryears
calls out from every corner
of my well-laden larder of
memories lying dormant
around and above me
Having already left this
world of visible reality
they invite my hungry heart
to feast at the table of friends
and strangers I never really knew

So thoughtfully written! How did you find the inspiration for this piece, if I may ask?

Great question. Several things were on my mind, including how few of my friends I’ve been able to see in the last year and a half. In addition, my husband and I are going to visit our son and his family tomorrow–the first time we’ll be together since Covid struck. Also, I’ve been going through old documents, cards, books, etc., finding things I’d forgotten and people I wish I’d known better. I’m also keenly aware of my age and the reality that I don’t have unlimited years left on this planet. Opening lines are normally where I begin (often without consciously deciding this is what I’ll write about, or clarity about where I’m going with it). I tend to let words (or images) lead from one to another, or from one thought to another. I hope this makes a little sense! 🙂

Indeed! Thank you for sharing! I have to say, you’ve certainly put down a wonderful read piece together while drawing ideas from a plethora of experiences and self reflections. I hope you had a good time with your son. Best wishes ♥️🌻

Beautiful – and more beautiful each time I read it. That’s what poetry is about.
