What makes your heart sing?
by Elouise
On the edge of sanity
my heart skips a beat
uncertain whether to
laugh or cry or fade out
of sight without so much
as a farewell or a hug
Looking around I wonder
why I’m still here after
a lifetime of trying to prove
I’m not a failure or a witch
wanting to poison anyone
intent on taking me down
I no longer believe old lies
about the meaning of life
and who gets to decide
who or what is worthwhile
as too many of us lurch along
drunk with our own goodness
All my life I’ve held tightly to this mantra: “Whatever you do, Elouise, do it well and do it with all your heart, mind and body.”
Rarely did anyone ask me what I wanted to do, what I most enjoyed about life, or what dreams I might have for myself. To attend to what I loved was often seen as selfish.
Instead, the mantra was always about responsibility, showing up, and persevering until the job was done. It seemed sensible, sane, and part of what I could offer, even after retirement.
This past week, in conversation with a longtime friend, I finally got it straight. At this age, I am NOT responsible for most, if not all the things (files and academic records) I thought I needed to hang onto. It’s time to let them go, with thanks to shredders.
Besides life with D and my volunteer work, I love playing the piano, writing, reading, watching birds in the back yard, and looking through old cards, notes and pictures from long ago.
Praying for this tired old world, and opportunities to reach out as I’m able. Plus commitment to things I love. They aren’t distractions from the real work. They’re the main agenda.
What makes your heart sing? Thanks for stopping by!

Dear Elouise,
I was SURE that music (and the piano, in particular) would be first on your “list,” and I was correct!
Thank you for this smile-inducing reflection!
I agree that shredding and recycling can be joy-inducing and weight-reducing activities…I have a ton (or two) awaiting our NPC shredding event this Fall!
With a smiling heart, I wish you an excellent evening!

Dear Debbie,
What a kind note. I’m glad it made you smile, and I’m especially glad to know there will be a shredding event at the church this Fall! Some of it can’t wait until then, but plenty will still be around, awaiting its demise. 🙂

Perhaps, Elouise, you can ritualize the “laying down”, all wrapped in gratitude and praise to the One who always has, and always will cherish you?

Hmm. Interesting idea–worth thinking about. Giving up the need to be ‘responsible’ (to my old job) is part of the struggle. On the other hand, I can’t begin to describe how good it is to be retired, despite the ups and downs of aging. 🙂

Keep doing what you love! 🙂
I am doing the same! SO many things make my heart sing! I’m making time each day for the joyful things that keep me sane! 😉 😀
YAY for paper shredders! We should trust that God will shred our sins, our fears, our anxiety, our sadness, our confusion, etc., if only we will let him. 🙂
(((HUGS))) ❤
PS…this is a fave quote that makes me smile: "Night will always remain a cat's magical, fanciful time.” – Jerry Climer
We can make the time to be fanciful during the day! 😉
How is Smudge doing?

Thanks, Carolyn! I love your fave quote, and I’m certain Smudge would agree with all his heart and strength. Just so he understands I’m in charge during the day! 🙂 Yes to the shredding image–to which I would add a huge bonfire to obliterate all that shredded mess, every speck of it! As for Smudge, he seems to be doing well–well enough to stalk two mice so far this summer. The downstairs is his domain when we go to bed. His latest catch was lying prostrate in his food dish when we came down to the kitchen a few days ago! Sigh…

I’m so glad to hear about Smudge. I think about him often and wish him well…even pray for him. 🙂

Ohh…I’ll tell him he has a prayer partner! 🙂 I don’t know what I/we would have done without him during this unending COVID crisis. He’s a sweet and mostly gentle, extremely privileged adult kitty! 🙂

I read you, but I see me. “Count that day lost whose low descending sun, finds no worthy efforts done.” hung in my childhood home. It not only created responsibility for everything I do but instilled a sense of guilt for having fun. Many of the things that made my heart sing, I can no longer do but I love to sing and counsel others in solving problems. But I really glow as there is plenty of time to read, work on my autobiography, cook fancy foods and draw with pen and ink. I have no time for guilt. Age makes life fly too fast and all is now fun.

Dear Lee, It’s great to hear from you! The saying that hung in your childhood home sounds way too heavy, especially for a child. I’m glad you found what makes your heart sing before it was too late. It sounds like you’re in a good spot right now (no time for guilt, etc.). I agree:”Age makes life fly too fast….” I’m still practicing what it means to focus first on what I love to do. Thanks for your encouraging comment. 🙂

Hi, Brian. You’re so welcome, and thank you for your kind comment. Today I’m doing quite well. Learning to do some things differently, which sometimes feels uncomfortable. Mary Oliver is one of my favorite poets. I hope your studies are going well during these troubled times.
