I seem to have gained a year overnight. Birthday #79! Here’s one of my oldest poems, first posted in March 2014. I didn’t write it for my birthday, but today it’s just right! I pray your day is filled with gratitude, thanksgiving, and hope for our weary world. After all, the wrens and sparrows haven’t stopped singing. So why should we?

Beethoven in floral garb
conducts ode to joy

Things that gladden and soften me,
making me deeply happy and grateful to be alive:
the carolina wren and white-throated sparrow
singing outside my window at dawn
opening notes of orchestral music
warming my heart, releasing tears, relaxing my body
walking in our neighborhood at sunset
as fading light catches the tiptop of trees and steeples
being with our family for sit-down meals
to celebrate birthdays and each other
the sound of waves breaking rhythmically
on sandy beaches and rocky shores
the smell of damp pine needles on the ground
following a rainstorm in the deep South
unexpected moments of deep grief
for Mother and for Sister #3
playing the piano for no one but myself,
weeping for the beauty and comfort of music
the smile in David’s eyes
when I walk into the room

Dear Kim,
What a wonderful message–which, yet again, landed in my spam folder! You NEVER write spam! Still, thank you, dear Kim, for this greeting. I had a quiet day, with beauty now and then, thanks to the wonderful people in my life. To be honest, it’s difficult to feel a year older–which is OK with me for now, even though I know it won’t last. π I pray this finds you well and still thriving as a writer! What a trip this has all been. Sending hugs and smiles your way!

Thank you, Gwen! I admit to having mixed feelings about getting older. However, I’m determined to squeeze as much beauty out of this next year as I can–all things considered.

Living here in this over-55s complex and being one of the – ahemm – younger ones, I watch with interest how each person tackles another birthday. One of my best buddies here just turned 79 and she is bouncing around. Then again, she has pretty good mobility (although she works at it with regular stretching) and her point of comparison – her husband – is 88!

Yikes! I’ve never (until the last year or so) considered how fortunate I am to be married to a man near my age. Both of us turned 79 this year. I know that doesn’t mean there won’t be surprises down the road. Still, I’m floored by how many women marry men 10 or more years older than they are. I’m also stunned by how much care older partners need. My father was much older than my mother. Yet my mother (a polio victim) died in 1999, age 77. My father died in 2010, age 96 (I think), and fighting every day to make it to 100. I hope my farewell is less fraught with pain and lack of connection to reality.

Oh, there’s lot of life in her old dog yet, to coin a phrase. And they had an adventurous life together, for example, sailed around the world twice in their two person yacht.
A number of people here are in their nineties and are still engaged with life, even if they need mobility aids. But I am talking about the independent living section. There are others with higher care needs in the assisted living section.

I loved your list of the things for which you are thankful but the last, the twinkle in David’s eyes when you enter the room, made my heart leap. Wow! What a blessing!
Seeing you on Saturday was such a blessing for me.

Hi, Marilyn. Thanks for your comment about David’s eyes! π Ever since the first day I met him (at the Bible college we attended), I’ve been captured by his eyes. As for seeing you on Saturday, I was ecstatic. One of the best gifts I’ve had since Covid and my health issues sidelined me.

Happy Birthday, Elouise, and I hope you did enjoy your big day. I’m sorry I’m late to the party, (but I’m not really (late). I read your blog early on 20th, which is also our wedding anniversary. Though I spent the day in bed – cellulitis – while the rest of the family went to the ballet.
I remember reading the poem when you first posted it. :-))) Bless you! β₯

Oh my! Happy wedding anniversary! What a way to spend your day–dreaming about the ballet, perhaps? My my. Your memory is remarkable. Thanks so much for being part of my life here on the other side of the big pond! π
