fledgling chickadees

by Elouise

fledgling chickadees
four babes outside my window
irrepressible

* * * * *

Exuberant, freedom-drunk and chirping madly

they teeter on spiny ribs beneath the canopy

of a green and white striped sunbrella

I laugh my way into tears of joy that

become sharp stabs of pain

Wouldn’t it be wonderful

on another planet

in a far-away galaxy. . . . . .

this joy-besotted moment catapulted

into reality eons before,

beyond this present grief?
