In a Forest Somewhere | Photos

Yesterday D and I went for a forest walk with family members. The weather was perfect: cool, not cold; drizzly, not raining; overcast, not stormy–with sun breaking through during the last bit of our hike. Lots of downhill and uphill climbing on a marked trail.
It’s mushroom season! My favorite is at the top of the post. A stand-out star among all the others. Other favorites included groups or little ‘congregations’ of mushrooms–most of them small to tiny. Short-lived, petite wonders.
So here goes. I have no idea what each of them is named, or whether they’re edible or not. I just love the way they look–often so small you could miss them if you weren’t looking.
I wish I could bottle (or photograph!) the smell of this forest. Decaying wood and leaves, dirt, pine and spruce needles on the ground, living ferns and mosses, damp air–all of it together. The smell of death and life all mixed together–with life ultimately winning out.

I, too, love walking in a forest. Growing up in Kansas, there were no forests nearby. It wasn’t until I was in high school that I went with an older brother and his wife to Minnesota and saw real forests for the first time. Now that we live in Maryland, I get to walk in the woods often.

Thanks for this memory. I can’t remember walking in forests until we lived in Savannah and went to the Appalachian Mountains for several summers where Mom and Dad directed a summer camp. Granted, the trees weren’t huge, but the look and smell of the woods, with creeks running nearby, hooked me!
Hoping you have a good day and a good walk in a forest somewhere nearby! We’re going to be in a national forest today. Yay!

Thanks, Raphaela! I just took a look and left my response. I love the questions you asked, as well as your own answers to the questions you received. So…I’m going to give this some serious (not too serious!) thought….and have some fun with it.
