Near the end it gets easier
by Elouise
–this letting go of goods
No longer useful
Or likely to help anyone
Signs of plans and promises
To oneself and others
Do I really need these things?
Is it possible to start over?
A thousand questions linger
And if only I had known
What I now know seems
A thimble full of hot air
Not nearly enough to last
When will we get there?
I thought this would be easier
My dear I really donโt know
Saying goodbye to a few things
Each day helps ease the load
Of dying now and then
Momentary heart pain of
The good kind mingles with
Whatever was I thinking of?
Life on the fast track
Moves slowly toward the end
Rushing to greet me with open arms

“Life on the fast track
Moves slowly toward the end
Rushing to greet me with open arms”
Wow, Elouise. As I am slowly moving back into full engagement after a six-month sabbatical (which ends 12/31), I too feel that life on the fast track is ‘rushing to greet me with open arms’–arms that would encircle and crush me if I permit them. May we trust thoroughly enough to relinquish the fast track for the ‘present’ track… the ‘I don’t need to prove myself’ track… the ‘time for love’ track.

Oh Laurie! I’m so glad you had a sabbatical, and totally understand the feeling of almost-panic as your time off comes to an end. I pray for you the last line of your wonderful comment. One of the benefits of retirement is that there’s no gaping hole waiting to swallow me up when I’m ‘tired’ of being retired! Except for all that accumulated stuff staring at me every day. We don’t need to prove ourselves. Staying in the present moment is always difficult. Though I must admit I have a strange sense of comfort, knowing the piles and files will at least be diminished–not added to. ๐

Beautiful, thought-provoking poem!
As we get more well-seasoned, we certainly see things in a different perspective. We are more aware of what is important and what isn’t, etc. ๐
I guess we reach a point where we find simplifying kinda’ refreshing. ๐
