birds flutter

birds flutter swoop dive
cat’s jaw quivers, tail twitches—
agony of spring

To Prince Oliver Smudge the Second, aka Smudge:
I hereby dedicate this haiku to Your Royal Catness
with the clear expectation that you will
immediately cease and desist
from all yowls of neglect and outrage.
You say it deeply pains you to watch me day after day
writing only about Me, Myself and I.
To be brutally frank,
I know much more about Me, Myself and I
than I do about the mystery of
Your Inner Being/Inner Cat/Inner Stalker.
HOWEVER
If you read Your Very Own Haiku with an open mind
you will discern therein
just how much I DO appreciate your agony day after day
as all those Nasty Spring Birdies flaunt their freedom in the Great Outdoors.
No. You may NOT go outside to play today!
I’m No Dummy.
Her Royal Highness,
Queen Elouise

Heehee, haha, heeheehee…wheeze…this was a howler of a post, Elouise! I LOVED it, and could imagine the twitching tail, quivering mouth, and inarticulate noises emanating from himself! What fun, even if it was at Sir Smudge’s expense!

That’s what I love about him–no matter what I write, he just stretches out on my lap and purrs away! Still, he would give anything to get out there and show the birds who’s in charge! Which would, of course, be me! 🙂 It was a fun write, too.

Brilliant. And no! YOU do not have permission to go and harass the tweetie birdies from me, either 🙂

Thanks, Gwen! It was such fun to write way back then, and even more fun to re-post! I’ve passed your grave warning sign along to him. He didn’t even flinch. I think he was too tired from watching the birdies this morning. 🙂

Hi, Carolyn! Yes, Smudge is quite the bird-watcher!!! Cracks me up sometimes. 🙂

Just the other day my dear husband said, “I would really like a cat”. Me too -so maybe we will get one now we have ‘hopefully’ settled into one place for a while. I’m jealous! How old is Prince Smudge?

Hi, Robin! Yay!!! Cats are great (especially if you keep them in the house). Prince Smudge was rescued by our granddaughters in August 2013. They figure he was about 4 or 5 months old. He was given to me because I’d said I wanted a cat again after I retired. So he’s now somewhere between 8 and 9 years old. Here’s a short link to Smudge’s version of his salvation: https://wp.me/s32tHJ-smudge
I hope you find the right one! He’s starting to slow down just a bit now–but still loves to play and chase crickets that love to visit our house at night. Mice too, though there aren’t as many of them as there might be, thanks to his skill in taking them down. Oh my. You can tell I’m a cat lady. I’ll stop now.
I hope you and your husband are doing as well as possible in the health department. I feel my old age more times than I’d like–and I’m grateful I’ve missed Covid so far.
