Does truth matter anymore?
by Elouise

Better yet, do we realize how difficult it is to say exactly what we want or need to say? This poem from Without a Flight Plan caught my eye yesterday. I can’t get it off my mind…especially given what’s at stake for us here in the USA.
Half truths + Half lies = Lies
And what about real life?
Half-truths
Half-lies
Does it really matter?
Yes means ‘Yes…but’
Not now means ‘maybe
in the sweet by and by’
Mind your manners
Sweeten your voice
Remember who you are not
You do care
About your children
Don’t you?
Or your job
Or your good reputation
Or your life
Sly words
Strung like pearl
Bullets
If you flee
They will find you
In the end
Now….
What did you want
To say?

Sometimes I wonder whether we in the USA are looking for truth, or for entertainment. Something that will lull us into the sad belief that everything is going to turn out fine, just fine. Not just everything about upcoming elections this fall, but what’s going on in the rest of the world. To say nothing about constant upheavals of nature and the weather.
I’m not suggesting we should become experts. We already have too many so-called ‘experts’ flooding our news media 24 hours a day. We can, however, become better listeners. Not just to our way of seeing things, but to those who don’t always (or ever) agree with us. Especially those closest to us.
Right now, however, I’m going to stop writing and get back to life in this old house with King David and Prince Smudge. I’d vote for either of them any day. And maybe for you, too!
How are you coping with current realities of this weary world?
Thanks for stopping by.

Elouise,
Listening is hard. I struggled with it in seminary, so full of myself, and I still do today. And I have people who want me to make pointed comments, pronouncements, oh let’s call it what it truly is, judgements and condemnation, about the politics of our times.
I try to model the non-anxious presence. I try to listen. It seems to me that we want to fix others or be fixed. But not with the truth, just the old fantasies and myths of a time when everything was good and right. For people who look like me. Who are of a certain income level. Whose children follow the rules.
Dr. King’s Letter from a Birmingham Jail haunts me, the moderate white preacher who is neither hot nor cold. The words of the 12 prophets ring true in my ears. But I don’t think we are Israel as much as Babylon.
Look! You pushed a button and I came out to play! 🤗😱
God be with you and yours!

Pastor D,
It’s so good to hear from you! Yes, Dr. King’s Letter from a Birmingham Jail is a tough, challenging read.
If I were to name one thing we white people haven’t gotten right, it would be our unspoken/spoken assumption that we are Superior. Chosen. Special. Sadly, as you suggest, all we have to do (but often refuse to do) is look around, listen, and learn who we (really) are and what we might do about ourselves and those we’ve ignored. Especially, but not only, from pulpits and in our church neighborhoods.
I pray this finds the two of you in good or at least reasonably good health.
Hugs to both of you!

Exactly. And precisely. And, we should be getting better, not worse. And, sometimes it’s all too much. Thank God for God and storytellers like you. In solidarity, your blog buddy from afar.
