Early Marriage | Haiku and Poem

by Elouise

Last December I published a longer version of this post. The portion below covers the period of time I’m writing about, our first year of marriage. Directly across the street from our apartment was an auto body shop open 24 hours a day. That’s because wrecks happen 24/7.

in bleak midwinter
red lights flash chaos men shout
dead on arrival

* * *

winter 1965
icy stormy
dangerous

first Christmas
as Mrs. F
love this man
why these
evening funks

motionless
standing
silent
staring out
kitchen
window

wrecks
towed in
across street
red lights
flashing

noisy
commotion
no room
in the inn
for more
dead bodies

first
descent
into
depression
