Millions of Small Potatoes

small-potatoes

Salt of the earth
Gone underground
Difficult to sow
Backbreaking to harvest
Millions of them
Grains of sand
Galaxies in the sky
Drops in the sea
Uncounted millions
Tossed aside
Trampled on
Taken for granted
Overlooked and underestimated
Our hope for the future
When we’re willing to plough
The good earth
Bend over backwards
Shed a few tears
Get our hands grimy—
No small potato left behind

From One Small Potato to Millions of Others
With Love, Hope, Vision
and Gratitude for the Faithful
Who refused to leave me behind.

The Waiting Room

waiting_room3

Body parts visible and invisible
Come and go like clockwork
Silently seek relief
My eyes wander
Linger on each bundle of hope
Dreaming of a better tomorrow –
The way things used to be

Tomorrow morning, Wednesday, I’ll be back in the waiting room Read the rest of this entry »

This Strange Journey

ripples-on-a-pond

Events I didn’t expect
No end in sight save each passing day
Restless nights invite anxious tears

Looking for something –
A sign that all will be or end well?
The reason I’m still here, not elsewhere?

My mind races Read the rest of this entry »

A Blank Canvas Reimagined

no-woman-is-an-island-2

I can’t get A Blank Canvas out of my mind. Sometimes, especially with distressing or puzzling dreams, I’ve written the next scene out as I imagine it might be. But this dream was different. Here’s what I’ve written instead–

No woman is an island….

Gentle swells of water
Calls from seabirds
The sounds of waves
Lap against my ears
Tree leaves rustle

The greatest adventure of my life
In the company of others
Keeping it simple
Floating in deep waters
Singing life with my words Read the rest of this entry »

Rain

rain on uneven pavement, loftransport.wordpress.com

Rain drops
on drenched ground
eyeglasses, face
and heart

Cracks loom
in un-even pavement
Tears spring unbidden
Artesian wells overflow

Unnoticed
I walk through this cold front
of memories, grief and healing

This morning I walked as usual Read the rest of this entry »

Peace is a Gift

alpine-flowers_25137

Nurture peace in your heart—
Welcome and savor it
Cultivate it
Water it
Let it rest
Give it space

Take its time for your time
Wrap it around your body yourself

Your shawl becomes you—
Blue as the heavens
Green as the garden
Brown as the good earth Read the rest of this entry »

Death

Elephant in the room cartoon

The elephant in the room.
What I don’t want to talk about.
Especially with people I love.

Mortality sounds better.
Not so stark and final.
Wiggle room between now and then. Read the rest of this entry »

Dancing into my heart’s eye

It’s time to take me into the operating room. I smile at D and get his gorgeous smile back. Ready.

Fasting | #6

Hospital patient gets TLC.

My greatest anxiety the morning of my procedure wasn’t whether I’d make it through the procedure. It was whether I’d make it to the operating room….
